Happy Veteran’s Day! Thank you to those who have served our country, those who are currently serving, and those that will serve in the future. Many who stand up to fight for our country are not U.S. citizens. They put their lives on the line for America’s freedom and opportunity before they even have the right to vote. To all our veterans, we can’t even begin to adequately express our gratitude for your continued sacrifice. On behalf of SER National and the one million individuals we serve annually, we thank you and your families for putting others before yourselves in service of this country.

SER National is expanding the reach of our 56th Annual Conference this year by going virtual on Nov. 18 and 19 with Community Day following on Nov. 20. The event, held on Facebook Live and YouTube Live, opens opportunities for more students and participants to access the conference, allowing SER to reach even more people. This year’s conference, entitled “Partnerships for Progress in an Era of Innovation” will include inspiring speakers, informational exhibits and challenging STEM competitions.
Gathering together virtually during our annual conference will be a chance for us all to learn together, grow together and be inspired. 2020 has been a year unlike any other. We need each other more than ever, and we need hope more than ever. I am confident that Conference and Community Day will spark hope and provide encouragement to our participants.
Currently, 2 countries, 18 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico will be represented at the Conference and Community Day. The virtual conference, though not our plan A, will enable many more individuals to be impacted by the great work and programs of SER, and for that, we are grateful! I hope to “see” you all there!

As the election draws nearer, SER National encourages everyone to vote! We have a chance to make our voices heard – each one of our voices. Voting has the power to make real change in our country and our communities. Voting affects more than who is in the White House – it impacts our daily lives. It affects our businesses, our taxes, our education systems, and more.
SER provides training and educational opportunities to the Hispanic community and other under-resourced populations so they may participate in the socio-economic mainstream, achieving equal access, parity and a voice in all aspects of American society. Voting is a crucial responsibility in our American society.
In the United States, the Hispanic population surpassed 60 million in 2019. That means there are millions of voices who must speak up and let their voice be heard at the polls. Together, we can’t be silenced. We hope you’ll join us and vote this year and every year to come.

A champion for climate change and a hero to his homeland, Mario Molina passed away on Oct. 7 at the age of 77. Molina is the only Mexican scientist to win a Nobel Prize for his research on the thinning of the ozone layer as a result of chlorofluorocarbons. His work, alongside Frank Sherwood Rowland of the United States and Paul Crutzen of the Netherlands, led to the drafting of the first international treaty phasing out the use of the dangerous chemicals.
Molina’s later work involved advocating for global sustainable development and confronting air pollution in major cities. He fought to make the world a better place and became a role model for so many scientists, as well as the Mexican people as a whole.
SER’s vision is to enable the Latino community and other under-resourced populations to fully participate in the socio-economic mainstream, achieving equal access and parity in all aspects of American society. We are grateful for people like Molina who have paved the way for so many to come after him. I am confident that SER will continue to fight for the Latino community to ensure more individuals have the same opportunities for success as Molina. Thank you for the legacy you left behind and for the example we can follow into the future.

Today, September 15, begins a month-long celebration and acknowledgement of Hispanic Heritage. For the next month, join SER National as we celebrate a broader view of history that includes the influence and contributions Hispanics have bestowed upon the United States. Hispanics have influenced our history, culture and society. We applaud each and every one of the accomplishments of our Hispanic leaders and innovators.
We must recognize Hispanic history, both the well-known stories and the stories that remain untold. SER’s vision is to enable the Hispanic community and other underserved populations, to fully participate in the socio-economic mainstream, achieving equal access and parity in all aspects of American society.
People are our nation’s most valuable asset. Throughout National Hispanic Heritage month, we will do our best to elevate Hispanic voices and shine a light on the contributions the Hispanic community has provided the United States throughout our past and well into the future.
“We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community – and this nation.” César Chávez
