Hispanic American Organization, Inc.

Hispanic American Organization, Inc.

Hispanic American Organization , Inc. was founded by Lupe Pearce in 1976 and Roberto Clemente Charter School in 2000 to assist Allentown’s growing Hispanic Community become more economically self-sufficient. It grew, in large part, from her personal experiences coming to the United States, having to learn English, and then finding jobs at the University of Chicago library and ultimately teaching Spanish in the Chicago school district, using the teaching degree she had earned in Chile.

When she moved to Allentown with her family, she could relate to the plight of Hispanics who had lost their jobs when factories closed. Without new marketable skills, they were unable to support their families as productive members of the community. With a small grant from The First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, Lupe opened the doors of HAO to train and educate Hispanic residents to realize their dreams. Maria Cruz was the first Latina volunteer.

Since those early days, HAO has grown from an organization with a nominal budget, a staff of one in a small rented office, serving a handful of clients to an active, vital center staffed by over 60 people, serving a cross-section of inner-city residents.

Saving Young Lives, Revitalizing Neighborhoods, Empowering Families And Senior Citizens

Saving Young Lives, Revitalizing Neighborhoods, Empowering Families And Senior Citizens

Barrio Station has faithfully worked to save young precious lives to help them reject drug use/abuse, violence and delinquency. Subsequently gang violence and drug addiction has decreased to a significant level in Barrio Logan where families enjoy a substantially improved quality of life, as all Americans deserve. Today we are embarking on campaigns to challenge the disturbing outsiders who are trying to force their interests upon our community.

Following the example of Cesar E. Chavez, the community engaged in many “house meeting media campaigns” to expose and combat the outsiders that deviously caused the deterioration of the spirit and physical landscape of Barrio Logan. New strategies are in place to protect our way of life. Photo: 1974 home of the Castañeda family. Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez, daughter Izcatli and Rachael Ortiz, Barrio Station ED

“I would like to thank the GI Forum for supporting me in my education. This scholarship facilitated my move from Santa Maria to Fullerton. I would like to especially thank Helen and Willie Glavan for their support. I am currently completing my 3rd semester at CSUF, and I plan to graduate spring of 2019. After completing my undergrad, I plan to enroll in a single subject teaching credential program and hopefully come back to teach at Santa Maria High School.”

Lizbeth Piñon Sosa
San Jose State University
Major: Justice Studies
Emphasis: Criminology

“It has been a pleasure to be a recipient of the GI Forum Scholarship. This scholarship has helped me greatly in furthering my education and transferring to San Jose State. I was able to pay for my books as well as rent. Without this opportunity I would not have been able to afford my textbooks nor be able to pursue my goal. I will soon finish my first year at San Jose State as a Justice studies major with an emphasis in criminology. I look forward to continuing my education and being closer to reaching my goal of becoming a Crime Scene Investigator. I truly appreciate the opportunity I was given due to the generosity of the donors.”
