Through Our Eyes Photography Exhibit Opening

On March 23rd, a collaborative photography exhibit, “Through Our Eyes, will open at the Narrows Center for the Arts. The over thirty contributing photographers are all adult English-language learners at SER-Jobs for Progress, Inc. who have made their home in Fall River.  Over the past year, the students have been exploring the world around them through the lens of a camera and taking photographs of whatever struck them as important, interesting, or beautiful.  Every week in their beginning and intermediate ESOL classes, they shared their photographs with one another and in what often became quite animated discussions, explained the meanings, cultural traditions, and artistic visions behind their depictions.  They each created work-in-progress journals that included all the photographs they had taken over the course of the semester, selected a set of favorite images, and then worked hard to create accompanying captions that expressed their thoughts and feelings.  This exhibit is the culmination of the students’ efforts to use photography to tell stories about themselves and their communities and to share those stories with wider audiences.

The exhibit opening is also the kick-off to the 40th Anniversary celebrations of Southeastern Massachusetts SER-Jobs for Progress, Inc.  This non-profit organization has been a leader in adult education, training, and employment since 1979.  Originally founded to improve the educational and employment outcomes of Portuguese immigrant families in Fall River, SER-Jobs currently serves residents of the greater Fall River area and other communities in Southeastern Massachusetts who come from diverse cultural backgrounds by offering a wide range of programs and services. The programs they offer include classes for English to Students of Other Languages, high school equivalency preparation classes for adults and out of school youth, and career exploration activities, training in computer literacy and technology, and job and career planning, counseling, and placement.

The themes of the Through Our Eyes exhibit reflect the students’ diverse interests and points of view.  Some of the photographs focus primarily on connections with family and friends.  Others depict traditions such as the making and sharing of food and celebration of special events.  Still others depict the beauty of nature, neighborhoods throughout the city, or new ways to see details of daily life.  A goal shared by all of the contributing photographers was to convey the important role the supportive educational space at SER-Jobs plays in their lives.  Their captions and autobiographical accounts reveal hopes and dreams and what it has been like to leave a homeland in order to make a new life for themselves and their children in the U.S

This project was made possible by a generous grant from MassHumanities, as well as contributions from SER-Jobs for Progress, Inc., and the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.  The second phase of this project, which will entail public art installations of photographs throughout Fall River, from the Through Our Eyes collection, is supported by a Creative Commonwealth Grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.  All the photographs are also accessible to the public via the Fall River Portraits website (fallriverportraits.org) which was made possible by a Creative Economies Grant from the University of Massachusetts President’s Office.

 MIAMI – September 13, 2018 – With only two weeks left, Telemundo is set to win the 2017-18 broadcast season and continue its winning-streak as the undisputed leader in Hispanic media. For a second season in a row, the network continues to make ratings history as it is on track to retain its lead as the #1 Spanish-language network in weekday 8-11pm prime among adults 18-49 and adults 18-34, according to Nielsen. Telemundo ranked among the top five broadcast networks with NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, during the season among adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. In addition, Telemundo delivered the youngest audience among all broadcast networks regardless of language, including the largest composition of adults 18-34 out of total viewers.

 “We are honored that Hispanics have chosen Telemundo as their preferred choice for the second season in a row,” said Cesar Conde, Chairman NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and NBCUniversal International Group. “We’ve listened to our viewers and created new and original content that delivers on their appetite for media across all platforms. This strategy is paying off in the ratings, but mostly in capturing the hearts and minds of today’s Latino audiences.”

According to Nielsen, this season Telemundo averages 722,000 adults 18-49 in weekday prime, +5% higher than Univision (686,000), more than doubling the gap it first established in the 2016-17 season. Among adults 18-34, Telemundo averaged 314,000 this season, surpassing Univision (296,000) by +6%, while it continued to close the gap among total viewers. Fueled by the success of its prime time line-up, Telemundo is delivering its highest weekday prime share in history among adults 18-49 (55%) in the third quarter of 2018, outperforming Univision’s (35%) and UniMas’ (10%) combined share by 10 percentage points.

 Additionally, for the fourth consecutive season Telemundo ranked as the #1 Hispanic network in the weekday 10pm hour and held more than a 50% share of the Spanish-language broadcast audience among adults 18-49 (52%) and adults 18-34 (54%). 

 This unprecedented victory is the result of the network’s commitment to redefining Hispanic media and providing action-packed contemporary stories that resonate and connect with Latinos today. This season, franchises “El Señor de los Cielos” (seasons five and six) and “Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso” (season three) claimed the top three highest-rated regularly scheduled series in all Spanish-language television among adults 18-49 and 18-34. Also ranking in the top 10 among both demos were Telemundo Super Series™ “Señora Acero” (season four) and “Enemigo Intimo.”

 Telemundo’s brand new program “Exatlon” was the #1 weekday prime reality competition series this season on Spanish-language television, averaging 508,000 adults 18-49 and 217,000 adults 18-34, easily outperforming “Reto 4 Elementos” on Univision’s UniMas network. The innovative reality competition boosted Telemundo’s Monday-Friday 7-9pm average by +21% among A18-49 (508,000 vs. 420,000) and +30% among A18-34 (217,000 vs. 167,000).

 On the digital front, Telemundo also leads across all platforms in Spanish-language ranking #1 in social engagement, #1 in YouTube subscribers, #1 in Video On Demand (for seven consecutive years) and delivers the biggest Spanish-language livestream sports event in history with the 2018 FIFA World Cup™.

 Telemundo’s programming has evolved with its audience – mindful of the way they consume media and the type of content they prefer. The network’s business model was designed to produce original content, positioning Telemundo as the only network that offers high quality content across all platforms made specifically for U.S. Hispanics living in the United States. Telemundo has been part of this rapidly evolving market and has demonstrated a unique understanding of what resonates and is relevant to this new audience, across all platforms, positioning itself as the leading network in Hispanic media today.

 Highlights of the 2017-18 Season include:

 

  • The World Cup posted the greatest 32-day performance in network history, setting records for the network’s most-watched daytime for every day of the week
  • For the first time ever, Telemundo ranked #1 in total day for two consecutive months (June & July 2018), among total viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34
  • The Latin American Music Awards 2017 Simulcast on Telemundo and Universo delivered the franchise’s best performance to date among adults 18-49 with 1.2M, +2% vs. 2016
  • Master Chef Latino premiere in January 2017 ranked as the #1 Spanish-language program in prime among adults 18-34, and ranked as the #1 most social show in prime among Hispanic networks on premiere night
  • The “Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso” season three premiere on June 2018, outperformed Univision’s premiere of “La Bella y Las Bestias” among adults 18-49 and adults 18-34, outperforming ABC, CBS and FOX at 9pm, among those two demos 
  • On Sunday nights, Telemundo’s Cine Exclusivo and Cine Millonario were the two highest rated regularly scheduled movie showcases on Spanish TV among adults 18-49 and adults 18-34

It is with great pleasure that Centro CHA Inc. announces receipt of a $40,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation. These funds will provide general operating support for the organization to enhance free positive family and community strengthening services through case-management, workforce development, college access, summer safety alternatives and safe passages, counseling, immigration legal services and referrals to other agencies. Our goal is to reduce violence and promote safe and healthy and sustainable places for children, youth and families to live, work and thrive.

Centro CHA is thankful to the S. Mark Taper Foundation investment to support our mission and work to provide services in the neediest communities of Long Beach.

The S. Mark Taper Foundation awards annual grants through a competitive application and review process. Centro CHA is honored and very proud to be one of the recipients.

Founded in 1989 the S. SER National Hosts First STEM-Focused Community Day

Former NASA Astronaut Jose M. Hernandez to address 2,000+ students 

Irving, Texas, March 22, 2018 — More than 2,000 Dallas-Fort Worth area students are expected to participate in SER Jobs for Progress National, Inc.’s first Community Day at Mountain View College on Thursday, May 17, 2018.

Community Day was added as part of SER National’s STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering and Mathematics) programs and as interest in SER’s year-round Robotics Program has grown. SER’s program is a hands-on educational experience, led by engineering students and professionals. The program also enhances middle and high school students’ academic, technical and leadership skills.

Former migrant worker turned NASA astronaut and engineer Jose M. Hernandez, who decided as a high school senior that he wanted to travel into space, will be the featured keynote speaker. Fernando Rosario, President and Founder of Exeqpath, a leadership development company, also will address the students.

Community Day will follow a two-day SER Robotics & Drone Competition, held as part of SER’s Annual Conference, May 15-16 at the Crowne Plaza-Dallas, 14315 Midway Road, in Addison. This year, 350 students from six area middle and high schools are expected to compete.

Community Day will also feature a job fair, where young people will have an opportunity to apply for jobs, internships and co-ops or work-study programs. Workshops and displays from an array of corporations and the Armed Forces, including the U.S. Army, Naval Academy, Air Force, NASA, CIA, FedEx, Charter, and Comcast will also be presented.

“We believe the U.S. Army and America’s educators have a common goal and we are committed to working together to motivate, educate, train and develop today’s youth to be leaders, decision makers and citizen-contributors that achieve life-long success,” said Lieutenant Colonel James E. Zoizack, Commander for the U.S. Army Dallas Recruiting Battalion. “The Army offers great educational programs such as March2Success and the ASVAB Career Exploration programs.

We have other programs that are anchored in fitness training, leadership, character development, education readiness, internships and STEM programs. These tools are ways the Army gives back to the community and the Nation we serve.”
